The Year in Cardiology 2012: valvular heart disease.
نویسنده
چکیده
Growth of the ageing population, advances in imaging techniques, newly available percutaneous interventions, and emphasis on the central role of the Heart Team in risk assessment and treatment selection combine to place valvular heart disease (VHD) at the centre of developments in cardiovascular medicine and surgery. However, VHD is poorly researched in comparison with other areas of cardiac disease, both at a basic scientific and clinical level. Until recently, there have been virtually no randomized controlled trials and international guidelines are largely based on expert consensus. Principal limitations to quality research are the diverse nature of patients with VHD, inability to identify individuals at the earliest stages of disease, and a lack of financial support and an appropriate investigational infrastructure. Guidelines attempt to address this evidence gap and a key publication this year was the joint European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons (EACTS) Guidelines on the Management of VHD. This concise and practical document provides recommendations on patient evaluation and risk stratification for both surgical and interventional procedures, coupled with emphasis on multimodality imaging and recommendations from the European Association of Echocardiography on the quantification of valve lesions. Evidence-based implementation of surgical mitral valve repair and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) feature strongly together with emphasis on the function of the multidisciplinary Heart Team in achieving optimal outcomes for this challenging group of patients.

The year in cardiology 2017: valvular heart disease.
Valvular heart disease is a subject of growing interest due to its prevalence and difficult issues in decision-making in the rapidly moving field of percutaneous interventions. During this year, a number of interesting articles addressed the topic of valvular heart disease with a special emphasis on imaging, interventions, and the publication of the new European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guid...

Dear Colleagues, As Editor-In-Chief of Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Medicine (JCTM), it is my pleasure to introduce this official quarterly publication of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, which is an international, peer-reviewed, and English language journal. Our aim is to publish high quality integrating clinical and experimental research in the following fields: Respiratory medici...
متن کاملValvular heart disease. The national society journals present selected research that has driven recent advances in clinical cardiology.
With an ageing population and improved diagnostic modalities, the number of patients with valvular heart disease is dramatically increasing. Considering projected changes in the age distribution, a further accentuation of this trend can be expected and this may indeed be considered “the next cardiac epidemic”.1 Obviously, we are faced with more complex decisions in patients with advanced age an...
متن کاملValvular lesions in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and antiphospholipid syndrome: an old disease but a persistent challenge.
Valvular heart disease is common in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and antiphospholipid syndrome. Immunologic insult plays a fundamental role in its pathogenesis but data on the role of antiphospholipid antibodies have been inconsistent, particularly regarding SLE-associated valvular lesions. Although timely diagnosis is essential to prevent progression of valvular lesions, treatment remain...
متن کاملThe prevalence of common cardiovascular diseases among 17-year-old Israeli conscripts.
BACKGROUND There are only few reports on the prevalence of common cardiovascular disorders among adolescents. The previous studies focused on specific diseases, and screened relatively small samples. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to define the prevalence of different common cardiovascular disorders among 17-year-old Israeli conscripts. A comparison between the morbidity patterns of fema...
متن کاملCURRENT OPINION The Year in Cardiology
2013 was the year of transcatheter heart valve interventions. Not least because of the 2012 European guidelines on the management of valvular heart disease (VHD), the multidisciplinary heart team approach became an established concept. Decision-making, when a patient is too ‘sick’ for surgery and too ‘healthy’ for catheter-based interventions, is complex, since VHD is often seen at an older age...
